Cameraman Sebastian Rich is seeking a $1.8m (€1.45m) book deal for his autobiography, in which he claims he had a fleeting sexual encounter with late British royal Diana, Princess of Wales.

The 52-year-old, who often travelled to the world's most dangerous war zones for Independent Television News, claims he had a fling with Diana in 1986 while shooting the royal documentary In Public, In Private with the princess and her husband Prince Charles.

According to a close friend of Rich, Diana became jealous of his affair with a courtier and decided to take matters into her own hands.

The source tells British newspaper The Sun: "In the manuscript he says Diana got jealous of him and the courtier.

"Seb says that Diana initiated them getting together. He says it was just a one-off. He described it as sort of 'schoolgirl jealousy' on her part.

"He is not planning to say where or when it happened or reveal details because he thinks it will hurt too many people."

A royal spokesperson insists Rich's claims are "untrue" and "extremely hurtful" to Diana's children Prince William and Prince Harry.
