Now that's a top-notch gathering of screen talent, and it shows in this off-centre drama that manages to deliver pathos and humour and characters we can relate to. Shepard plays a cowboy star whose sunset has long passed.

Taking off from his latest dismal horse opera he heads for his mother's home (Saint), chased by detective Roth. There he is reunited with a lost love (Lange), and at least one off-spring … possibly several more. It's a film rich in sharp dialogue and wonderful characters who engage us thoroughly in their complex lives.
