Golden Globe winner to present Meteor award
Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is to present one of the awards at next month’s Meteor Ireland Music Awards ceremony in Dublin, organisers confirmed tonight.
Just last week the Cork-born actor himself picked up an accolade as he scooped the Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Film Made for Television at the Los Angeles Golden Globes ceremony for his performance in Elvis.
After picking up the Golden Globe, the shocked 28-year-old said it was as good as scoring a goal for Arsenal in the FA Cup.
Other celebrities presenting awards at the Point Theatre event on February 2, 2006 include Stephen Rea, Liam Cunningham, Keith Duffy, Gavin Friday and Kerry Katona.
The Cork actor’s breakthrough came when he played the young assassin in Neil Jordan’s 1996 biopic of Irish revolutionary Michael Collins. He has since starred in Bend It Like Beckham and Alexander, and is currently appearing with Scarlett Johansson in Woody Allen’s Match Point.
The Darkness, Westlife, Jamie Cullum, The Pogues, Bell X1, Damien Dempsey and Republic of Loose are expected to perform at the glitzy ceremony.
On the night there will be 17 Meteor Ireland Music Awards presented.
Six of the categories are chosen by the public, through text messages.
The Hope for 2006 Award for up-and-coming bands will be voted for by 2FM listeners, while music industry representatives will chose the remainder.
U2, The Corrs, Hal and Bell X1 are vying for Best Irish Band, while Damien Dempsey, Joe Chester and Christy Moore are bidding for Best Irish Male.
Those in the running for Best Irish Female include Sinead O’Connor, Roisin Murphy, Sharon Shannon, Mary Black, Gemma Hayes and Claire Sproule.
Tickets for the Meteor Awards are available to win through competitions in newspapers, on radio, TV and through texting.
