Doherty nearly missed Live 8

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty almost missed his duet with Elton John at London's Live 8 concert on Saturday completely - he woke up to find his car had been clamped.

The wayward star had parked illegally in north London, and neither he nor his manager James Mulford had enough money to pay the fine.

He explains: "James told the guys we didn't have any cash. They recognised me, saw our Live 8 passes were genuine and seemed embarrassed to be clamping us.

"But their boss effectively said, 'We don't give a damn who you are, or whether it's Live 8 or not.'

"She said we'd have to pay the fine. In the end we caught a taxi."

But the Live 8 audience may have preferred it if he hadn't bothered - his performance was the biggest disappointment on a star-studded bill.
