Elvis tops 50 most successful music acts

Robbie Williams has become one of the top 50 most successful acts of all time.

Robbie Williams has become one of the top 50 most successful acts of all time.

The former Take That star has eclipsed the likes of Madness, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen and Celine Dion in the Guinness World Records list.

Elvis Presley remains the most successful act of all time, with a total of 2,463 weeks in the UK singles and album charts.

Cliff Richard remains in second place with 1,972 weeks, followed by The Beatles (1,749) and Queen (1,725).

Williams has spent an average of 78 weeks per year on the Official UK Singles and Albums Charts since he embarked on his solo career.

If he continues accumulating weeks at the same rate, with no further releases from Elvis, he will overtake Elvis as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll in 2029.

Madonna remains in fifth place in the list, from the Book of British Hit Singles and Albums, with 1,653 weeks in the chart.

Michael Jackson is eighth and has swapped places with David Bowie, who was eighth last year and is now in ninth place.

Williams was 51st in the chart last year, and now makes 43rd place, just below the Eurythmics, according to the compilers, with 682 weeks in the UK singles and album charts.

Book of British Hit Singles and Albums assistant editor James Bradley said: “For Robbie to continue to speed up the chart so strongly is a fantastic achievement and proves that he is still winning new fans while keeping the old faithful ones.

“It looks like his popularity will continue for years to come.”

The Book of British Hit Singles and albums is published on May 20.
