Jamie Lee Curtis believes giving up alcohol saved her life, because she was heading for self-destruction.

The actress cites giving up drinking as the "smartest" move she ever made although she finds it a constant day-to-day battle to stay sober.

Curtis, aged 46, said: "One of the most important things I ever did in my life was get sober (in 1999). It was a big choice for me - carry on drinking and go down one path, or stop drinking, and go down the other.

"I chose to stop drinking. It was a monster thing to do, and one of the smartest things I ever did.

"There are days when it's hard because I know I'm an addict and I know I'm an alcoholic. Now I have a much clearer sense of myself and what I can and can't do."
