New Zealand, the South Pacific nation that local director Peter Jackson transformed into Middle Earth for his epic Lord of the Rings films, was in raptures today as the trilogy’s final instalment swept a record-tying 11 Oscars including Best Director for Jackson and Best Film.

After the first two movies picked up a total of six mainly minor Oscars in the last two years, the emotional finale Return of the King finally grabbed top honours.
