Ozzy Osbourne was honoured with the Godlike Genius award at the NMEs tonight.

The rocker is at home in Los Angeles recovering from his recent quadbike accident, but sent a thank you message on video.

He said he had no idea why the award had been bestowed on him.

“I’m far from being a genius,” he said.

“Look at what happened to me before Christmas – that’s hardly genius.

“I ended up nearly breaking my neck and breaking my collarbone and ribs, and being in intensive care and in a coma.

“I’m just glad I’m still breathing.”

Previous recipients of the award include The Clash and Sir Paul McCartney.

Daughter Kelly was at the ceremony in Po Na Na’s in Hammersmith, west London, to pick it up on his behalf.

Vernon Kay hosted the awards, traditionally the grungiest and most unglamorous in the showbiz calendar.

Sadie Frost was there with toyboy lover Jackson Scott, but celebrities were thin on the ground.

Radiohead won best album for Hail To The Thief and best video for There There.

US rockers Kings of Leon, a favourite of Kate Moss and Liv Tyler, were named best new band and best international band.

Best UK band were the Libertines, who have not had the easiest past few months.

Former singer and guitarist Pete Doherty was jailed for six months in September after admitting burgling a bandmate’s home.

The Darkness were up for a host of awards, including best UK band, best live band and best single for I Believe In A Thing Called Love, but won nothing.

Hardly surprising, as singer Justin Hawkins has vowed never to co-operate with the music magazine after it slated the group’s first single.
