Tomlinson agent walks free in theft trial

The former agent of TV star Ricky Tomlinson walked free from a UK court today after being cleared of trying to steal more than £26,000 (€37,000) from the actor.

Patrick Nyland, aged 59, of Heaton Chapel, Stockport, Greater Manchester, was accused of attempting to obtain money by deception.

The charge related to a TV advert, allegedly arranged by Nyland, in which Tomlinson was to star.

But prosecuting barrister David Owen said a decision by the police to disclose evidence to Tomlinson’s solicitor had been “an irregularity” and a mistake.

Nyland walked free from Preston Crown Court after Mr Owen offered no evidence against him.

The case will now be dealt with through the civil courts.

Nyland, who was Tomlinson’s agent for eight years until the pair parted company last October, refused to comment as he left court.

Outside court, Tomlinson said: “Once again, due to a technicality, this case is being referred to the civil courts. We will just have to wait and see.”
