Food fantasies 'sending Blaine crazy'

Magician David Blaine is going out of his mind with fantasies about food.

Blaine is attempting to spend 44 days surviving on nothing but water while suspended in a glass box by Tower Bridge.

And the illusionist said he was so hungry that his mind was filling with images of every meal he had ever eaten.

Communicating through a microphone installed in the box, Blaine made a rambling speech about his food cravings.

“When you go without eating ... for nine days... I start thinking about the most specific things that I eat... everything that I’ve ever eaten that I ever liked,” he said.

“I close my eyes and see those vivid images, it’s just like I’m really eating it. I mean, detail by detail, you see it too... and this is only nine days.”

Blaine said the stunt was really starting to take its toll on him.

“I think it’s about to get tough. I was just thinking it’s only nine days – I have another, oh God, 35 to go. That’s a long time, 35 days,” he said.

“So what I’m gonna do, I’m gonna pretend that I’m just starting now and that’s it’s 44 days from now – that should help. But I’m vividly seeing food.”

Blaine has had to endure a comic throwing a full English breakfast at the glass, while two jokers tormented him by attaching a cheeseburger to the bottom of a remote controlled helicopter.

But he insisted that the sight of food was not making his ordeal any worse.

“Everybody on my crew is eating food. I’m watching them all eat. It’s funny. I like watching people eat, actually,” he said.

The New York-born magician said he was suffering from dizziness every time he tried to stand, and from now on would only exercise whilst lying down.

And he claimed he was on the verge of cracking up in his self-imposed prison.

“I wonder how much longer ‘til my mind goes away – not permanently – but before I go a little crazy,” he mused. “I’m starting to laugh a lot – obsess about really weird details and stuff.”

Those details include film trivia, as Blaine revealed: “I got to think about other things. I got to put my mind elsewhere. I was just thinking about what an incredible cast was in Godfather 2 – Brando, De Niro, Pacino, Duvall, Cazal.”

The microphone is apparently only one-way and can be heard through Sky One’s Sky Active service or on the Channel 4 website.

But Blaine is hardly living in isolation – he has been in regular communication with girlfriend Manon van Gerkan, who has kept a daily vigil to ward off egg-throwers.
