The Crime of Father Amaro

Once upon a time our screen priests were decent, ordinary citizens; now they are depicted as highly-sexed men of dubious character. Welcome to the real world!

In a film, from Mexico, where the Catholic Church has risen in anger against it, we meet the new priest (Bernal) sent to a small parish where the old priest (Gracia) is having it away - and away and away - with his housekeeper. The new priest decides it all looks like fun and has it away - and away and away - with the housekeeper's teenage daughter. They'd be better off on a small Irish island having another cup of tea!

The playing is good, but there is nothing for the cast to get its teeth into, aside from teenage daughters. It's all a tad melodramatic and overly shocking.

Father, forgive them.
