Scorcese nominated for directors award

British director Stephen Daldry and Golden Globe winner Martin Scorsese are among the nominees competing in the prestigious 55th annual Directors Guild of America (DGA) awards.

Daldry received a nomination for The Hours starring Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep while Scorsese got a nod for his epic Gangs of New York.

The other nominees were Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), Rob Marshall (Chicago) and Roman Polanski (The Pianist).

Though none of the five has previously won a DGA award, Scorsese is a five-time nominee and was recently selected by the DGA for this year’s lifetime achievement award.

Polanski is a third-time nominee and Jackson has been nominated once before for the first in his Lord of The Rings trilogy last year.

The nominations were selected from 382 eligible pictures by the DGA’s 12,000 members.

The winner will be announced on March 1. Last year’s winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) went on to win the best director Oscar.
