Sophie leaves breakfast TV with a tear
Presenter Sophie Raworth left BBC Breakfast after more than five years today with a tear in her eye.
The morning show host had a lump in her throat as she told viewers: “I hate saying goodbye.”
Fellow presenter Dermot Murnaghan gave his emotional co-star – who is moving to the Six O’Clock News – a consolatory hug as the show ended.
Raworth was presented with a mocked-up newspaper front page announcing her departure and a photo album full of snaps of her and colleagues, who had also penned good luck messages.
Director general Greg Dyke was among those who wished her well.
“When I started, I remember standing in the bathroom at 3am on my first day thinking I’m not going to last a week, never mind the end of the year,” she said.
“I was on a six-month try-out – and that was five-and-a-half years ago.”
She will be replaced by former Sky News presenter Natasha Kaplinsky next week.
Raworth can also be seen performing in a Rocky Horror Show sketch with former Breakfast colleagues as part of tomorrow evening’s Children In Need appeal live on BBC1.
