Angry Kylie can't get reality TV out of her head
Chart star Kylie Minogue has taken a swipe at reality TV shows for encouraging youngsters to seek fame rather than foster any real ambition.
She said youngsters were now simply hoping to become well-known rather than developing a talent to back it up.
Minogue herself became a child star in Australia before becoming a hit overseas in TV soap Neighbours.
She said she found the obsession with fame âfrighteningâ in an interview on BBC Radio 1âs Jo Whiley Show today.
Minogue said there had been a change in outlook where people are now seeking fame itself after being reared on Big Brother, Popstars and Pop Idol.
âFame used to be a by-product. We can look at it and see a little bit more clearly whatâs happening, but for teenagers thatâs the kind of TV theyâve had for the last five years with Big Brother etc.
âItâs like âwhat do you want to do when you grow up?, I want to be famousâ. What for? It doesnât matterâ.
She continued: âI think itâs frightening. You should have your ambition to do something before that â itâs all too easy to say theyâre not talented, obviously they can perform, they can sing, and what the judges and the press always go on about is weâre looking for the extra ingredient.
âAnd you might find it, you might not with a TV special dedicated to it.â
Her comments follow Robbie Williams dismissal of the proliferation of TV talent shows. He branded them âcruelâ for messing with peopleâs lives.
And he was critical of Popstars: The Rivals for asking losers to sing just seconds after they have been given the boot from the show.
Kylie also revealed she was a demon at word game Scrabble.
âIâm so competitive and I know all those really annoying two letter words,â she said.
