Bollywood star Salman Khan was today charged with rash and negligent driving after his car allegedly jumped on to a pavement, killing one person and injuring three others who were sleeping there.

Khan abandoned his car after the accident, but later surrendered to police, said Bombay Police Commissioner M.N. Singh.

Khan could be jailed for two years if convicted of the charge.

He was arrested in 1998 for allegedly hunting and killing a deer in a desert wildlife preserve in western India’s Rajasthan state.

Khan denied the charge and was released on bail. The case has yet to be decided in court.

The charge of poaching endangered animals carries a prison sentence of up to seven years in prison.

Last year, police questioned Khan about the Indian film industry’s links with the mafia.

Taped phone conversations between an Indian film producer and an alleged mafia leader in Pakistan have sparked an investigation into whether organised crime networks are funding India’s film industry – the world’s largest, producing nearly 800 movies a year.
