Thousands turn out for Pop Idol star's 'homecoming'
Up to 15,000 fans turned out to welcome Pop Idol star Gareth Gates back to his home town.
The 18-year-old was greeted by screaming youngsters in Bradford's Centenary Square as he performed after being given a civic reception by the council.
Streets throughout the city centre were closed for the homecoming event which attracted families, groups of teenagers, pensioners and some loyal fans who had travelled from all over the north of England.
Even the occasional heavy shower did not dampen the enthusiasm of the crowds as Gareth was joined by his sister Nicola for a duet dedicated to his home town.
One city councillor, Phillip Thornton said: "He got a true Bradford welcome. It was a fantastic day.
"Even the rain didn't seem to put anyone off. He got a great reception and he went down really well.
"It was a great day for the city."
Gareth's homecoming was organised as part of Bradford's bid to be the European Capital of Culture in 2008, which the young star supports.
Speaking before the concert, he said: "Coming home to Bradford is always special as this is where my friends and family are."
"The support I've had locally means the world to me."
