Decision day for Glastonbury festival

Councillors are meeting to decide whether to grant an entertainment licence for this year's Glastonbury festival.

The three-day Somerset event was cancelled last year because of fears over crowd safety.

The last time the music festival was held in June 2000 it was attended by double the licensed number and organiser Michael Eavis was fined.

He was fined £6,000 for breaching the terms of his licence after 200,000 people turned up.

This year Mr Eavis has applied for a licence for a crowd of 140,000 in order to cover the £2m (€3.2m) cost of extra security measures.

Earlier this week, Avon and Somerset Police withdrew objections to the application, clearing the way for the licence to be approved.

Mendip District Council's regulatory board are meeting to discuss the issue in Shepton Mallet.

But Mr Eavis has warned even if the licence is granted, his festival will only have "one last chance" to prove it can keep out the gatecrashers.
