The duo were voted the best example of comradeship in a poll on friendship in the 21st century.

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders were second in the poll, followed by DJs Sara Cox and Zoe Ball.

According to the poll, conducted by Lindemans winemakers, ideal friendship tends to be found between people of the same sex, who share the same history, background and sense of humour.

When asked who they thought their ideal best mate would be, men chose Kylie Minogue, who scored 17%, beating Johnny Vaughan who got 13% of the vote and David Beckham, who got 12%.

Davina McCall was the celebrity most girls would like to call their best friend, with 16% of the votes, followed by Cat Deeley with 11% and Martine McCutcheon with 9%.

Over 1,000 men and women between the ages of 18 and 45 were questioned for the survey.
