Day 2 of the Cork International Choral Festival features Grammy-winning The Swingles in the Gala Concert, but Thursday's events have plenty more to offer as well. Check out some of the highlights here. 

Five events to check out at the Cork International Choral Festival today (Thursday, April 27)

11am:  The Art of A Cappella Masterclass with The Swingles - Curtis Auditorium, CIT Cork School of Music

The Grammy award-winning group The Swingles will conduct an ‘Art of Acapella’ Workshop at the Cork School of Music, as part of the Festival’s free three-day Choral Symposium, which includes numerous workshops and a range of interesting talks and practical sessions on choral practice.

1.10pm: Choirs at Christchurch - Triskel Christchurch

Two top international choirs will bring their serene sounds to the beautiful setting of Triskel Christchurch.

Jubliant Girls Choir, Italy and Vokalemsemble ‘Crossover’ from Germany will perform a selection of stunning pieces so make the most of your lunch time. Admission free.

3.30pm: Athens 18th Junior High Choir - Crawford Art Gallery

Junior High Choir is a cultural excursion into both the past and present of Greece. The choir repertory includes Greek folk and artistic songs, byzantine hymns, folk songs of other countries and songs of scholar western music. Admission free.

5pm: Core Singing with Dr Trish Rooney - Doolan Room (Room 217), CIT Cork School of Music

CoreSinging, a relatively new holistic performance pedagogy that incorporates five essential elements: energy, awareness, imagination, practice and performance, was developed by Dr Meribeth Dayme in 2010.

This workshop will be given by Advanced CoreSinging teacher Dr Trish Rooney who is voice lecturer on the BA in Popular Music at The Cork School of Music, Director of The Academy of Popular Music & Voice of Ireland Vocal Coach. Suitable for vocal coaches and singers of all levels and styles.

8pm: Gala Concert – The Swingles - Cork City Hall.

A Gala Concert with the Grammy award winning group, The Swingles, at Cork City Hall.

They will perform a diverse collection of folk music from around the world using their own creative arrangements. For more than half a century Swingles have pushed the boundaries of vocal music and this will most certainly be a highlight of the 2017 Festival for all music lovers.

The Swingles first made waves in the 1960s, when American-born Ward Swingle first assembled a group of Parisian session singers to sing Bach’s keyboard music.

The resulting album, Jazz Sebastian Bach, launched the Swingle Singers to fame. Since then, they have won five Grammy awards and appeared on numerous film and TV soundtracks, including Sex and the City, Milk, Grey’s Anatomy and Glee.
