1. Film Fans

The Cork Film Festival opened last night and will screen more than 70 feature films, including Kelly Reichardt’s Montana drama Certain Women which won the best picture prize at the recent London Film Festival.

With 52 documentary films, more than 100 shorts, and 55 countries represented, this is a chance for film fans to see some unique screenings as over 80% of the movies featured would not make it to the big screen here.

2. Music Notes

Musician John Spillane will sign his books in Waterstones in Cork today from 4pm. Over the last 33 years he has played with many bands, written hundreds of songs, an opera and now, for the first time, a book. Will We Be Brilliant or What?

(The Collins Press, price €16.99) is full of music and stories as Spillane gives insight into the inspiration behind his best loved songs.

3. Worth an Experiment

Ever wanted to know the science behind beer, or how science affects how we live or what we eat. Science Week is off and running with a range of free events and workshops for all budding scientists.

The ‘Celebrate Science’ open day event will take place in UCC’s Western Gateway Building tomorrow and the big finale will be the Science Festival ‘Community Open Day’, in Neptune Stadium on November 20.

4. Watch the Birdie

Falconers from across the world will gather with trained birds of prey and traditional costume to celebrate World Falconry Day 2016 in Sneem, Co Kerry on November 16.

More than 200 delegates from 80 countries will take part in the AGM of the International Association of Falconry and Conservation of Birds of Prey in Sneem Hotel. Falconers, from the Steppes of Mongolia to the pampas of Brazil, will assemble.

5. Clonakilty is hosting what could be the end- of-season marathon on December 3. Registration closes on November 22.

The Clonakilty Waterfront Marathon VII offers distances for all levels and ages: 10K, half-marathon and the full marathon.
