You might have spotted the USS Porter on your travels around Cobh this weekend.

Ever wondered what it would be like aboard a USS destroyer. Wonder no more.

The (DDG-78) Arleigh Burke-class destroyer has been berthed in The Deep Water Quay as part of her travels around Europe and Ens. McKenzie Anderson caught up with our videographer, Dan Linehan, and gave him the low down on the ship's bridge and the very advanced weapons systems on board.

Dan also stumbled upon the inevitable Cork connection when he met up with Cdr. John Tobin, the executive officer on board, whose family originally came from Cork.

Based in its permanent home in the Spanish port of Roat, the USS Porter is one of four such Destroyers assigned to the United States Sixth Fleet in Europe.

It formed part of the US offensive in the Iraq War and has also been involved in combating piracy off Somalia.

Most recently it entered the Black Sea in June as part of NATO’s ongoing efforts in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The vessel has a crew of almost 300 personnel led by Commander Andria Slough.
