Great Irish furniture takes pride of place at sales in Kilkenny and Kildare
Irish furniture will feature at Mealy’s on-the-premises auction at Kilfane House, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, next Tuesday at 11 am.
This sale will include contents from Castlemartin House, Co Kildare, with fine and decorative arts from the private collection of Sir Anthony O’Reilly.
These are to be sold on the instructions of the trustee in bankruptcy appointed by the Bahamian court.
Among around 650 lots is an Irish William IV serving or hall table, by repute from Kilkenny Castle, estimated at €5,000-€7,000.

A mid-18th century side table (€20,000-€30,000), an 18th century carved gilt wood wall mirror (€8,000-€12,000), and a Provincial long case clock by Charles Harrison of Limerick (€8,500-€10,000) are among the other highly collectible lots of Irish furniture.
There is a good selection of garden furniture and statuary as well as paintings, prints, ceramics, glass, silver, plate, carpets, rugs, and rare books.
Viewing at Kilfane House is from 11am to 5pm today and tomorrow and from 10am to 5pm on Monday.

Meantime, there will be viewing at Townley Hall, Slane Rd, Drogheda, from next Saturday for Adam’s sixth Country House Collections sale.
Slane Castle is the usual venue for this annual auction but with distillery works in progress there, Adam’s has decamped to the magnificent surroundings of Townley Hall, a Georgian masterpiece by Francis Johnston.
Irish Georgian furniture promises to be the star of a sale which showcases Irish country house interior decoration.
There is, for example, an exceptionally long Chippendale serving table c1770 (€15,000-€20,000), a breakfront bookcase (€10,000-€15,000), an Irish yew wood secretaire bureau cabinet in the George I style (€5,000-€8,000), and a large Irish Georgian turf bucket (€15,000-€20,000).
The auction is on Tuesday week at 11.30am.
