This 'cable robot' is a virtual reality experience like no other
Developed in Germany at the Max Planck institute, The cable robot gives the sensation of flying in a helicopter by combining a multi-directional moving platform with a virtual reality headset.
The Platform which is suspended from the ceiling is attached to eight Cables connected to engines on the ground. A robot controls these engines, moving the platform in a variety of directions corresponding to what the rider is seeing on their headset.
Scientists are using the cable robot to study the vestibular system, the parts of the inner ear and brain that help control balance and eye movements.
This simulator opens up new possibilities in the study of motion perception and research into balance disorders.
Though only a prototype, the robot could be scaled down and installed in a smaller room, unfortunately the institute has no plans to market the design to consumers.
