Meet the Irish girl who founded the American wizarding school Ilvermorny

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is out in November, 2016 - and we've got a lot to learn about this new take on the Harry Potter universe.

For one thing the film takes place in the 1920s and it's also in America, so we're going to have to find out about how the wizarding world works across the pond. And that starts with being introduced to Ilvermorny, that's the American version of Hogwarts.

First things first, it was founded by an Irish girl. That's right, Isolt Sayre was born in Co. Kerry at the beginning of the 1600s and suffered the tragic death of her family at the age of five. She escaped her cruel relatives and set sail for the New World on the Mayflower, which is where the story gets really interesting.

If that's not enough you can read her entire tale over on the Pottermore site, as penned by J.K. Rowling herself. It's an incredible resource for fans of this world, and you can now be sorted into your indivisual North American houses. There are four, with pretty delightful names, based on some local magical creatures:

Horned Serpent; a ‘great horned river serpent with a jewel set into its forehead’

Pukwudgie; ‘a short, grey-faced, large-eared creature’

Thunderbird; a creature that ‘can create storms as it flies’

Wampus; ‘a magical, panther-like creature that is fast, strong and almost impossible to kill’

The world building for Fantastic Beasts is already starting, and it might not be long before Ilvermorny is held in the same esteem as Hogwarts.
