Lots of interest in Morgan O’Driscoll’s upcoming art sale in Dublin

FROM the likes of Seán Scully and Louis le Brocquy to Letitia Marion Hamilton and James Humbert Craig, the variety of art on offer at Morgan O’Driscoll’s upcoming sale of Irish and International Art in Dublin on April 25 drew plenty of viewers to Skibbereen last weekend.
Foul weather on Sunday did not stop bids being taken for an auction due to be on view at La Galleria, Pall Mall, London next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before moving to Dublin for viewing on Friday.
There are two artworks by Paul Henry, A Kerry Lake (€60,000-€80,000) and Man Crossing a bog (€15,000-€20,000).
A different treatment of a bog by James Humbert Craig entitled Labouring in the bog, Donegal is estimated at €6,000-€8,000.
The Hurlers — a rare painting of a sporting event by Louis le Brocquy — is a watercolour which dates to 1947.
It is estimated at €15,000-€25,000.
A grid watercolour by Seán Scully entitled 3.17.02 has an estimate of €30,000-€40,000.
Letitia Marion Hamilton’s painting of Bunbeg, Co Donegal caused quite a stir in west Cork.
It was shown at the Oireachtas Exhibition in Dublin in 1949 and is estimated at €15,000-€20,000.
The 20 lots of sculpture features work by John Behan, F.E. MacWilliam, Sandra Bell, Rory Breslin, Anna Linnane, Leo Higgins, Helen Walsh and Selma McCormack and French sculptors Yves Pires and Jose Maria David.
The Traveller at Rest by Charles Henry Cook (c1830-1906) is a rare example from a Bandon artist whose work is now being re-discovered; it is estimated at €2,000-€3,000.
Michael Flatley’s Colorado Springs is estimated at €30,000-€50,000. A self portrait by the American artist Alex Katz has an estimate of €6,000-€8,000 and a coloured screen print by the acclaimed British artist Bridget Riley, Red Red Blue, has an estimate of €4,000-€5,000. The sale is at the RDS at 6pm on Monday week.
