Tributes poured in from all corners of the hip-hop world this week after the loss of the great Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest at the tragically young age of 45. The New York-raised MC was born Malik Isaac Taylor and founded the seminal group in 1985 with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and had struggled with diabetes, undergoing a kidney transplant in 2008.
Along with the likes of De La Soul, the Tribe were at the heart of one of hip-hop’s richest ever eras with such classic tracks as ‘Bonita Applebaum, ‘Can I Kick It’? and ‘Check The Rhime’. Meanwhile, Will.i.am has revealed he has a hard drive with unheard recordings of the likes of Michael Jackson, Whitney Huston, Beyonce and others from the pop world who worked with him in the studio over the years.
