Rare and varied delights under the hammer at Woodward’s in Cork

An historic Atkinson, a Queen Anne bureau bookcase, a 10in Regency sideboard, a three-pillar dining table, and a Victorian four-poster bed are among the delights on offer at Woodward’s in Cork on this day week.

The auctioneers say the sale, which is on view from today, is one of the best collections of furniture to be offered in Cork in many years.

The George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson oil on canvas is a rare pictorial record of the visit of Queen Victoria to Cork Harbour in 1849, as a result of which the Cove of Cork was renamed Queenstown, reverting to Cobh in the late 1920s.

The painting of the Royal Yacht Squadron bringing Queen Victoria to Cobh has already featured on these pages and it is estimated at €25,000-€30,000.

The double-domed Queen Anne bookcase has an estimate of €5,000-€8,000, the pillared dining table, which extends to 16ins, is estimated at €6,000-€10,000, the four-poster at €2,000-€3,000 and the sideboard at €4,000-€6,000.

There is an estimate of €3,000-€4,000 on a pair of Coalbrookedale garden seats.

Among other lots of interest are a Georgian long case clock with parquetry inlay by John Hallifax (1694-1750), Barnsley (€2,000-€3,000), a Georgian hunt table (€1,000-€1,500), a pair of demi-lune card tables (€2,000-€3,000), a sarcophagus wine cooler (€800-€1,200), a set of eight Cork 11-bar chairs (€3,000-€4,000), a pair of mythological scenes (€4,000-€5,000) and a small inlaid desk (€800-€1,200).

There are drawings by William Harrington including The Dealers (€1,500-€2,500), The Beggar Lady (€1,000-€2,000) and The Apple Lady (€1,000-€2,000) a Seán O’Sullivan portrait of Eamon de Valera (€300-€500), work by Markey Robinson and a portrait of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera by Francisco Ribera Gomez (1907-1990).

Viewing is from noon to 5pm today, 2pm to 5pm tomorrow and from 10am to 5pm all next week.

The auction is on March 12 at 11 am.
