The latest acting veteran who may have joined the cast of Game of Thrones is Richard E Grant, according to unconfirmed reports in the UK.

What to watch on TV this week

British survivalist Bear Grylls has had the scoop of his life with the guest appearance of Barack Obama on his Running Wild show for NBC. Filmed already and due to be shown later this year, footage has already emerged of Grylls and the US president eating a salmon that had already been chewed on by a bear.

SATURDAY 

The X Factor

TV3, 8.15pm

Simon Cowell and co run the rule over another batch of hopeful singers trying to secure a place in the Boot Camp on the way to the live shows.

Sport

Soccer action includes Aberdeen v Celtic (Sky Sports 2, ko 12.30pm), Everton v Chelsea (BT Sport 1, ko 12.45pm), Arsenal v Stoke (Setanta, ko 3pm) Man Utd v Liverpool (Sky Sports 1, ko 5.30pm) and Atletico Madrid v Barcelona (Sky Sports 2, ko 7.30pm). In Pro12 rugby, it’s Scarlets v Ulster (Sky Sports 2, ko 3pm) and Leinster v Cardiff (Sky Sports 4, ko 5.15pm). The U21 hurling final features Wexford v Limerick (TG4, throw-in 7pm).

SUNDAY

Íobairt an Iascaire

TG4, 9.30pm

Documentary following the men onboard the trawler Iúda Naofa on a 10 day trip for prawns to the Porcupine Bank. The featured boat sank earlier this year off the coast of Scotland, with all the crew rescued by helicopter.

Sport

The All-Ireland camogie finals on RTÉ2 feature Cork v Galway (throw-in 4pm) in the senior game, and Kildare v Waterford (throw-in 2pm) in the intermediate. It’s Ospreys v Munster (TG4, ko 2.30pm) in Pro12 rugby, while soccer action on Sky Sports 1 features Sunderland v Tottenham (ko 1.30pm) and Leicester City v Aston Villa (ko 4pm).

MONDAY

Vikings

RTÉ2, 9pm

Another series of the show that pumps millions into the Irish economy with its filming sessions in Wicklow. Last year we saw Ragnar Lodbrok flex his muscle in England, and while the restless Viking king gains even more power there, he’s also looking further afield towards Paris.

West Ham v Newcastle

Sky Sports 1, ko 8pm

Both these teams might have fans with unreasonably high expectations, but it’s the Londoners who are in cheerier form at this stage of the season, as the feelgood factor continues from their move to a new stadium. Steve McLaren, meanwhile, looks like he already has a fight on his hands to save the Magpies from relegation.

TUESDAY

Meet The McDonaghs

RTÉ2, 9.30pm

Kelly McDonagh Mongan and her affable family give us another look into their daily lives. It’s been a busy year for the Traveller clan, and we see pregnant Kelly’s new home in Galway, as well as checking in with her parents and siblings in Fermoy as they get ready to head off to a horse fair in England.

Champions League

The most watched game in the first round of group fixtures will be PSV v Man Utd (TV3), with the impressive pairing of Graeme Souness and Brian Kerr on the analysis panel. Elsewhere it’s Man City v Juventus ( Setanta Ireland) and Real Madrid v Shakhtar (Setanta 1, ko 7.45pm).

WEDNESDAY

Later Live with Jools Holland

BBC Two, 10pm

The best music show on TV returns for an eight-week autumn run, with the usual extended version also available on Friday night. First up are indie heroes Foals, recent Electric Picnic visitors My Morning Jacket, veteran songstress Rickie Lee Jones and London electronic act Disclosure, complete with guest vocals from Sam Smith. There’s also an appearance from the host’s orginal band, Squeeze.

Champions League

Dinamo Zagreb v Arsenal (RTÉ2, ko 7.45pm) has the Gunners off to Croatia for their first game in Group F. Other fixtures tonight include Chelsea v Maccabi Tel Aviv and Roma v Barcelona.

THURSDAY

F**k Cancer

RTÉ2, 9.30pm

This documentary in the Reality Bites strand follows 2FM DJ Louise McSharry as she battles Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the lead up to her wedding. It uses self-shot video diaries and other media to show the then 31-year-old as she runs through a range of emotions as she shaves her head, tries on her wedding dress and eventually celebrates her big day at Ballinacurra House Hotel near Kinsale.

Hunted

Channel 4, 9pm

Episode two of the reality thriller show plays on terrorist stereotypes as two bearded Asian men travel through the UK with their backpacks. Elsewhere, Rickey Allen is still dodging the hunters in Scotland.

FRIDAY

Rick Stein: From Venice to Istanbul

BBC Two, 9.30pm

You won’t be surprised to hear that the chef finishes his tour in the Turkish capital, along the way joining a fishing trip on the Bosphorus river, and also cooks up kofte kebabs with pistachios.

Rugby World Cup

TV3, 7pm

Following the opening ceremony at Twickenham, the action at this year’s tournament will begin with England v Wales (ko 8pm), with TV3’s panel featuring Keith Wood, Matt Williams and Hugo MacNeill. Ireland’s first game is against Canada the following day. Soccer fans can catch Ipswich Town v Birmingham (Sky Sports 5, ko 7.45pm) in the Championship.
