VIDEO: Shocking footage shows pram sucked into freight train's path

Video footage released by Australian train operator Queensland Rail shows just how easy it is for a baby’s pram to have a dangerous encounter with a high-speed train.

Luckily, the pram was empty at the time - in what authorities say was a "close call".

The train approaches at 1:15 in the video footage.

The video, released by the rail operator to highlight the safety issue, shows a parent walk down the platform and divert her attention to the child - who was not in the pram at the time - only for the pram to be smashed against the train in five seconds.

The mother had diverted her attention to keep the child firmly behind the yellow line - but the pram was over the safety marker, and the rushing air from the passage of the freight train sucked it directly into the side of the high-speed train.

Queensland rail said the pram was "significantly damaged by the impact."

"The footage is a sobering reminder of the importance of being vigilant at stations and on platforms, especially when travelling with children and objects such as prams," a spokesperson said.

The company said some trains travel at up to 160kph, and encouraged rail users to take care on platforms, and not allow themselves to be distracted.

"A second is all it takes for an incident like this to turn from a close call to something much worse ... we cannot stress enough to please be vigilant and keep a close eye on children and prams.

"Ensure both yourself and children in your care are safe by applying the brake to moving objects, standing behind the yellow line, obeying safety signage and staying well within designated safety areas."
