WATCH: Mayo carpenter collects €6.3m Lotto cheque

Ireland’s newest millionaire, a carpenter from Co Mayo, has received his winnings of over €6.3m today.

Ger Murphy, 52, collected a cheque for a whopping €6,384,673 at Lotto Headquarters in Dublin this afternoon.

Ger from Ballinrobe in Co Mayo was accompanied by his three sons and daughter, and extended family as the ceremonial cheque was handed over to cries of "Up Mayo".

Mr Murphy told Newstalk that he still has not worked out how to spend the money.

"I’m delighted with myself," said Ger.

"I couldn’t believe it at the start. I’m going to go on holiday anyway first, next week somewhere and think about it, and see what I’ll do then.

"I’ve a big family, two big families. [We’ll go] somewhere nice and hot and lie on the beach. I’ve had the same numbers for the last 25 years - date of births, and birthdays and deaths."

The carpenter bought his winning ticket from his brother-in-law’s shop, Murphy’s Newsagency, in Ballinrobe.
