This year’s Ireland Folk Fest will be held in the tourist town of Killarney in Co Kerry from 24th to 26th of July.

Folk Fest Killarney to create ‘positive and lively atmosphere’

A host of Folk musicians will descend on Killarney along with hip, alternative, independent music lovers in Ireland as Folk Fest Killarney kicks off on Friday.

Folk Fest Killarney at the INEC offers something for every festival goer from four different stages over the course of three days.

Whether it’s the comeback of a legendary supergroup, a visit from international artists, or the performances of young rising stars, each act has a common desire to keep spirits high from dusk ‘til dawn.

Folk Fest goers have a range of performances to chose from. A showcasing of the best of Kerry on the Gathering Stage, an outdoor céilí with the Tulla Céilí Band, intimate performances in the Acoustic Club and acts in the Ballroom and Main Stage.

Festival programmer, Conor Byrne, said, "Putting together a programme for the first Folk Fest Killarney is very exciting for me and everyone involved - a coming together of the best in traditional, contemporary and alternative folk, from many parts of the globe.”

“We are very much about catering for artists and audience, in a way never seen before. Rest assured, this will be one of the best musical experiences for everyone involved," he said.

Fans will get the opportunity to watch lifelong favourite acts such as Begley & Cooney, Luka Bloom and Tinariwen, discover new artists to Ireland such as Druce & Jones or Tim Eriksen, and those relatively new to the festival scene such as locals Ríona and Bryan O’Leary.

Councillor Nial Kelleher said, “I am thrilled to see an event like Folk Fest taking place in Killarney. Traditional and Folk music is a big part of our culture here in Kerry, particularly with Sliabh Luachra, an area that has generated musical legends like Johnny O'Leary only outside of the town. His grandson, Bryan will be performing at Folk Fest and it is fantastic to see local talent taking to the stage among esteemed  acts like Moving Hearts and Luka Bloom.”

“Any event that generates business for the town is a great boost, it also creates a positive and lively atmosphere among tourists who I am sure will relish the opportunity to see prolific international musicians perform in what has to be the best and most diverse venue in the country to date, the INEC,” he said.

Friday night kicks off with Moving Hearts & Special Guests, The Unthanks, Vieux Farka Touré, Luka Bloom and Fiddlers Bid.

Moving Hearts will be performing a one-off concert on Saturday night. Saturday’s jam packed schedule sees over twelve acts including Begley and Cooney, Lost Brothers, Lynched, Aldoc, Druce & Jones and Lumiere.

Sunday’s line up is guaranteed folk from dusk ‘til dawn as Mícheál O Súilleabháin, Paddy Glackin, Martin Hayes & Iarla Ó’ Lionáird with Steve Cooney, Moxie, Julie Fowlis and many more promise to leave you reeling. Sunday also includes an outdoor céilí with The Tulla Céilí Band.

Managing Director of the Gleneagle Hotel Group, Patrick O’Donoghue, said, “Folk Fest will be an amazing celebration of music and it builds our tradition of hosting wonderful events here in Killarney all year round.”
