Bears Don’t Read

Children’s books

Unlike his easy-going brothers and sisters who swim and chat and catch fish, George the bear likes to know about the nature of all things. When he finds a discarded book in the grass he sets out to find the owner despite his family’s warnings.

As he looks through the pages he hopes someone in town will show him how to read. But when he saunters in, everyone flees from the big bear-except-perhaps one endearing little person. Beautifully illustrated and full of laughter, this is surely a book to keep and pass on. Age 4 +

Deadly Game by Beth Chambers (Bloomsbury €7.55)

Parents’ worst nightmares centre on Redrock where a host of 12-year old children have gone missing over the years. Naturally young Scott’s parents are suffocatingly protective. But one day he is visited by a mysterious stranger who promises to cure his very sick sister Emily if Scott rises to the challenge he sets him.

He is also guaranteed he won’t die in the process, and if he succeeds he can put an end to the curse that has befallen Redrock. When Scott finally decides to accept the challenge he is dismayed to find that others have been offered the same deal and that only one of them can be the winner.

William Shakespeare — Scenes from the life of the World’s Greatest Writer by Mick Manning and Brita Granstrom (Frances Lincoln €16.35 HB)

This is a very attractive story of The Bard’s life in graphic novel format. As well as short summaries of some of his more famous plays there is lots of information about Shakespeare’s time, school life with its ups and downs including his cheekily carved initials on a desk; the influence John Cottam who loved teaching through drama; Will looking forward to and helping with the Mystery and Miracle plays.

There are details about his father’s financial problems, as well as lots of credible theories about Will’s middle years. Complemented by short accounts of the sometimes tense political background. Age 10+
