Here's some events which should be on your radar this weekend

COMEDY CAPERS:

As well as adding another date to their appearances at the Abbey (next Wednesday), the Rubberbandits are bringing their Continental Fistfight show on the road, with shows including Galway’s Town Hall Theatre on May 3; Lime Tree, Limerick, May 23; and Everyman Cork on May 31.

The Everyman also has Bernard O’Shea performing his wonderfully titled What To Expect When You Are Not The One Expecting on April 4.

David McSavage is in Cork at the Everyman in The Pillowman, and will be popping down the road to City Limits for the comedy night tomorrow.

MUSIC NEWS:

Who says hip-hop is dead? Kendrick Lamar released his much anticipated album, To Pimp A Butterfly, on Monday and managed to break the record for first-day Spotify streams, previously held by Michael Bublé’s Christmas. That’s progress.

Leonard Cohen’s new album, Can’t Forget: A Souvenir of the Grand Tour, is released on May 11, and you’d have to imagine that will also challenge Spotify’s bandwidth. It contains two original tracks, with the rest of the album being made up of rarely heard tunes from his back catalogue that were recorded during soundchecks and live performances on the 80-year-old’s last tour.

Finally, yes, Kanye West is to headline Glastonbury this year; and yes, there’s been the inevitable online ‘backlash’ by a vocal minority.

GIG WISE:

Usher is at the 3Arena in Dublin tonight, while Tyler The Creator has announced an appearance for the Academy on August 26.

Scullion launch their new live album at Triskel in Cork tonight, while Damien Dempsey plays the city’s Opera House tomorrow.

Harmony queens, The Staves, will perform at the Everyman on May 7. The Savoy is the venue for the return of Route 94 (‘My Love’) to Cork on April 17, while Duke Dumont plays another gig at the venue on May 1.

Other club nights include Derrick May at the Twisted Pepper next Friday.
