Festival Focus - Darkness on the Edge of Town

We're fresh from the Sky Road TV and Film Festival and wanted to give you the lowdown on an Irish film to keep your eye on

Going to film festivals is a great way to discover new films and filmmakers but it can also be frustrating because many of those movies will never get a theatrical release. So after recently attending the Sky Road TV & Film Festival I wanted to highlight a couple of films which I think deserve to get some attention.First up is Darkness on the Edge of Town.Directed by first time feature helmer Patrick Ryan its the tale of what happens when a young woman is killed and her sister (Emma Eliza Regan) sets out for revenge. The first thing that struck me about the film is how incredibly stylish it is, with dense, dark visuals and a focus on creating powerful images to compliment the inherent violence of the picture.There's considerable drama to the tale certainly but also a level of action (and gruesome effects) which we rarely expect from Irish cinema. In many ways it doesn't feel a home grown product - and I mean that in the best possible way. There's a great use of music too and a portrayal of young people which doesn't feel like it was written by someone who hardly even remembers what it was like to be the fairer side of middle age.
