A Question of Taste: Anna Geary

ANNA GEARY is the captain of the Cork camogie team, the Cork Rose 2014 and a marketing executive with Dell Ireland. She also is a national ambassador for Ireland’s first Workplace Wellbeing Day, which takes place on Friday, March 27.

A Question of Taste: Anna Geary

Best recent book? Friday Night Lights, by HG Bissinger.

Best recent show/gig? The Coronas are excellent live. I love a smaller venue, as it is more intimate and the atmosphere is brilliant. I wish I could have said I went to Ed Sheeran’s gig in Whelan’s, but, alas, it was not to be.

On what formats do you access music? Love listening to the radio on the way to work. Mostly iTunes, so that I can sing (off-key) to my tunes in the car.

Best piece of music you’ve been listening to lately? ‘Uptown Funk’ — I challenge anyone to listen to that song and stay absolutely still.

First piece of music or art that really moved you? The first time I ever heard Whitney Heuston’s song, ‘I Will Always Love You’, I felt goosebumps.

TV viewing? I rarely have time to watch TV in the evenings — I do love putting on a good DVD. And Graham Norton’s show always makes me laugh, if I catch it. My guilty pleasure is reruns of Friends — they make me smile every time.

Radio listening? Red FM or 96fm are on in my car in the mornings going to work.

Best recent holiday? I’m going to New York with the Roses and escorts in March, for St Patricks Day; I cannot wait, as I have never been there before. I was in Dubai last year and it was amazing.

Your best celebrity encounter? I met Brian O’Driscoll at the RTÉ Sports Awards in December and it was such an honour. He is a sporting icon in this country and across the world. The only way I would have topped it is if Amy was there with him. She is fabulous and has the best sense of humour.

Best animal encounter? My two dogs, Buddy and Fido. They are at my parents’ house, so when I go home I love playing with them.

Most expensive item of clothing you’ve ever bought?: Probably a dress for the Rose of Tralee. I don’t really buy top designer brands too much. Half of the time no-one knows the difference. As my aunt says: “You can’t put a price on style.”

Tech habits? I have an iPad and an iPhone 6, so I’m technically ‘up to date’, but I just have the phone because it has a brilliant camera and you never know when you need to capture a moment. I use Snapchat a lot. It’s nice to see someone’s pictures when they are sending you a message. My brother, Thomas, is in Australia, so we keep in touch using Snapchat a lot.

Weekend treat? It’s all about moderation — I wouldn’t deprive myself of something if I wanted it during the week. After training hard in the lead-up to a game, once the game is over a nice pizza, followed by banoffee pie, is something to look forward to.

Health and fitness: I try to make healthy choices. Choose the wholemeal option, small things like that. I eat a lot of protein, meat in particular. It’s so good for training and for muscle repair and it really fills you up. I eat a lot of fruit, too, and have been trying to eat more green vegetables recently. I always feel better after exercise; I just dread doing it sometimes. But whether its bikram yoga, training or the gym — working up a sweat makes me feel good. And I never regret exercising. Sometimes, I exercise at lunchtime, so that it’s out of the way and I have a free evening.

Unsung heroes: GAA sportswomen need more recognition — or any female Irish sportsperson, for that matter. Also my mam, for putting up with my dramatics!

You are queen for a day — what’s your first decree? Three-day weekend!

On a serious note, make PE an exam subject. It would encourage younger people to exercise more.
