Lost In The Sea Of Despair

Children’s Books

Another title in the Lost series, with its now well recognised format. This looks at the dangers and despair of being lost at sea and marooned on a desert island. As well as providing interesting facts about marine life and survival techniques, a series of problems is posed. If the reader chooses the wrong option, moving to a designated page will explain the consequences. The method of imparting knowledge is thought-provoking. Suitable for age eight and upwards.

Luan Agus An Morphiano by Gemma Breathnach (Futa Fata; €9.95 HB As Gaeilge) This is a charming story about Luan, a talented, music-loving mouse who lives under the floorboards of a concert hall. Luan is overjoyed when a grand piano is put on stage, but a certain Madam Allegretto is furious when she sees him bouncing up and down on the keys. At night during her concert performance Luan falls onto the piano, and, to everybody’s amazement he plays quite beautifully - his hours of practice having paid off. This is a gentle and touching story, enhanced by Delphine Bodet ’s warm illustrations Suitable for age three to six.

There Will Be Lies by Nick Lake (Bloomsbury; €16.35) As the title hints, this is a story about revelation. Shelby Jane Cooper has existed in a mother-dominated cocoon of protectiveness for17 years. When she is knocked down by a car, which mounts the pavement, her mother panics and insists they leave town, citing mysterious threats to their safety. On the journey Shelby realises that she doesn’t really know her mother so the journey becomes a metaphor for her questioning everything about her own life. Shelby also inhabits a sometimes puzzling dreamworld, infused with Native American mythology. Her entre to this parallel existence was inspired both by an encounter with a coyote, and a conversation with a boy she befriended in their local library. This is a challenging read, but worthwhile to experience the rollercoaster of plot twists and turns. The ultimate revelations, though well-flagged, are worth the wait. Suitable for age 14 and upwards.
