Scene & Heard

MUSIC NEWS: What do you get the Bob Dylan fan who has everything?

Scene & Heard

Perhaps an exclusive performance from the man himself. That’s what superfan Fredrik Wikingsson got earlier this week at Philadelphia’s Academy Of Music. The Swede sat alone in the hall as Dylan played to him as part of a film series exploring experiences for one person that would usually involve a group. Hot Press reports that Irish band Kodaline

are currently in California recording music, soaking up the sun and hanging out with actress Courtney Cox and her fiance, Johnny McDaid from Snow Patrol. Fine for some.

Arcade Fire are still very much an item, but fans of the Canadian band may also be interested in Will Butler’s solo material which is streaming at the moment, and will take the physical form of an album in March.

GIG WISE: ZZ Top are the first international act to throw their hat in the ring for Live at the Marquee next year, with the Texan veterans rolling into Cork on June 22. In the meantime, The Coronas play Cyprus Avenue in the city on Wednesday, while the Riptide Movement are on the following night. The Everyman in Cork has announced Jack L as its headliner for a New Year’s Eve concert. An interesting event in Dublin tomorrow is the Connecting Musicality concert at CFCP on Pembroke Street. The gig represents the fruits of a series of collaborations between singers and songwriters on either side of the Atlantic, with performances at the venue being interspersed with a Skype link to a simultaneous event in New York. Participants include Rónán Ó Snodaigh of Kila and Alan Tobin from West Cork. And yes, just in case you missed the Slane announcement, Kaiser Chiefs and Hozier will support Foo Fighters at the venue on May 30. Tickets at €79.50 + booking fee go on sale on Monday.

CLUB LIFE: Mark Knight returns to the Savoy in Cork next Friday, with a bag of tunes that will presumably include several tracks from his Toolroom label. Fish Go Deep bring their house sounds to Crystal in Waterford tomorrow, while Mr Scruff does his five-hour mix at the Button Factory in Dublin on January 16.

FILM TIPS: While the arrival of the singalong version of Frozen will light up the lives of the little girl demographic, big people also have plenty options at the cinema at the moment. The Imitation Game and the well-received James Brown biopic Get On Up are among the quality dramas, while fans of Muhammad Ali shouldn’t miss the I Am Ali documentary. Cork Cine Club shows true Australian adventure story Tracks next Thursday at St Johns College, while the Triskel’s roster from Sunday includes US indie tale, the Skeleton Twins; and West Cork-based actor Jeremy Irons in Night Train To Lisbon. The Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival has renewed its call for entries for next May’s event.

ALL AND SUNDRY: British comedian Ross Noble brings his Tangentleman tour to Cork Opera House on Dec 7, and the Olympia in Dublin on Dec 9. Rugby celebs such as George Hook and Brent Pope provide cameo voiceovers for Joe Prop, the tale of an overweight child who escapes the playground teasing by becoming a spot in the scrum in the school team. The play runs at axis: Ballymun on December 10-12.
