MERRILL Garbus was worried. It was early 2013 and Garbus, creative force behind alternative pop outfit Tune-Yards, had been touring for 18 exhausting months. She needed a break — and yet nagging voices in her head were striking up a chorus: ‘Could she afford to take time away? Would people forget her?’

“I’m quite an over-achiever,” she says. “I see these other bands touring, like all the time — Haim, Future Islands, and so forth. I was totally freaked out about going away. It was scary. The thing is, I really, really needed to. I couldn’t carry on.”
