Specs For Rex By Yasmeen Ismail (Bloomsbury; €8.30).

Children’s books

Little Rex is not at all happy with his new specs. He tries many tricks to disguise them — from brushing his hair over his face, hiding in the class tepee, painting the specs and thinking up many more equally amazing ploys. But teacher Miss Spots has a cunning idea, which makes Rex so proud. This is the perfect book to share with the child who is about to have glasses. The loosely styled illustrations may take some getting used to, but the vivid colours and humorous storyline make up for that. A laugh-aloud story for age four and upwards — with or without specs,

Captain Underpants And The Attack Of The Talking Toilets by Dav Pilkey (€12.60 HB). When they see the poster for the school’s Annual Invention Convention, George and Harold decide to have a go — which will hopefully be better than last year’s fiasco when the pair glued teachers and kids to their seats — in a glue and sticky putty way. What will be their opus magnum this year? Think of toilets with sharp teeth, a guy called Captain Underpants and the chaos that ensues when the duo ‘rearrange’ the inventions of their classmates. Crazy fun for age eight and upwards.

Twisted Winter: Chilling Tales From The Darkest Nights edited by Catherine Butler (Bloomsbury; €8.30). This is a collection of mostly subtle and understated chilling tales. ‘Dark’, by Katherine Langrish sees introverted Tim receive a dog as a present from his parents — not the type of dog he would choose, but a companion nevertheless. When he strays into a graveyard he is confronted by his nemesis from school — Miles and his bullying mates. What transpires causes Miles to steer well clear of him, and Tim to steer well clear of the same graveyard. ‘The Party’ by Susan Cooper is another highlight where the guest of honour proves quite uncooperative and a Halloween mask causes consternation among children and adults alike. With subtexts of bullying, property developing, and parental problems this book is suitable for age 12 and upwards.
