Live music: Paul Weller

Paul Weller’s status as arch geezer of British post-punk has served him in good stead down the years. For gentlemen of a certain age (over 50) and sartorial sensibility (Fred Perry pulled tightly across beer belly) he’s both rock legend and cultural icon; the missing link between The Beatles and David Beckham. Yet this persona has distracted from the experimental character of his finest music, as demonstrated by 2010’s Wake Up The Nation, a feverish paean to his recently passed father.
He starts his healthily attended Kilmainham date with a blistering reminder of his eclectic streak: ‘Fast Car/Slow Traffic’ is woozy with krautrock aspirations; ‘Wake Up The Nation’ and ‘From The Floorboards Up’ see him take an axe to his Modfather reputation. He does tip his hat to the nostalgists early on — however, it is via the Style Council’s jazz-funk styled ‘My Ever Changing Moods’ rather than anything by The Jam.
