Capturing the magic of Harry Potter in a nutshell

A gently irreverent and affectionate take on the books is how director Richard Hurst describes Potted Potter – The Unauthorised Harry Experience, a parody of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books that opens at the Everyman next Tuesday, April 22.

The Olivier-nominated show, which has travelled the world, including a 16-week stint on Broadway, is for all the family. “The fantastic thing about it is that you can come to see it with any level of knowledge about Harry Potter and you’ll be fine,” says Hurst. “If you’re a parent and you’ve managed to avoid reading the books, then this is a very easy way to mug up on all seven books. If you’ve read all of them a hundred times, you’ll still get a lot out of the show.”

Hurst says that some grown-ups come to see the show on their own. “There are some slightly odd American fans who dress up in full Hogwarts’ regalia. And there’s a lot of people who play Quidditch (a semi-contact sport played by wizards and witches) which features in the show.”
