Online and in the shops: Jelly bean boxes
Fairtrade Fortnight (until Mar 10) celebrates its 11th year with the theme ‘fair play to ya’, thanking Irish shoppers for their support, and encouraging a fair deal and better future for everyone. Last year, Fairtrade Ireland launched a three-year campaign to promote Fairtrade cotton.
One of the cotton producers listed on the Fairtrade Ireland website is Organics For Kids baby clothes, which are made from fairly traded textiles and manufactured in Britain. This lovely, raspberry romper, with bird design, is made from 100% organic cotton, €21.50, and can be combined with a bird bonnet, €12, or bandana bib, €9; www.cherishme.ie.
Ethical trading is the Lush philosophy and their stores stock products containing Fairtrade ingredients. Lush’s therapy massage bar, €8.70, reduces stretch marks in pregnancy, and contains Fairtrade organic cocoa butter, from Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, where cocoa production represents 90% of the income; www.lush.co.uk.
As well as buying tea, sugar or fruit, you can support Fairtrade with your choice of treats. The four-finger Kit Kat bar has been Fairtrade-certified since 2010, and this has been extended to the two-finger Kit Kat, which means an extra 800m bars a year will carry the Fairtrade mark. Nestlé UK & Ireland will purchase an additional 5,300 tonnes of sustainable cocoa from Fairtrade farmer co-operatives in the Ivory Coast, who will receive a fair price, plus an additional premium to invest in community projects, such as healthcare and schools.
The Jelly Bean Factory has been a supporter of Fairtrade since 2010, and uses Fairtrade sugar in its 75g gourmet jelly bean boxes. This supports producers in Malawi. The 36 flavours are mixed in The Jelly Bean Factory laboratory in Dublin and contain only natural colours and flavours and are gluten-, nut- and gelatine-free. Prices start from €1.39, from groceries and health stores; www.jellybeanfactory.com.
