WHEN you tell your child that a new baby brother or sister is due to arrive, their response may surprise you.

“Some kids have no interest — they’re like, ‘Yeah, whatever’. Girls can be quite excited, particularly if they’re little mother hens. And some children are jealous from the moment they hear the news, saying, ‘No, I don’t want a baby, leave him in the hospital’,” says psychologist Niamh Hannan, of www.helpme2parent.ie.

It’s impossible to predict which child will be jealous, but the emotion is common when there has been one child in the family.
