Roll call of Irish and British artists at Whyte’s sale
Post-independence Dublin is featured in Yeats’ Crossing the City which dates from 1929 and is estimated at €100,000-€150,000.
A commanding self portrait by Leo Whelangraces the cover of the catalogue. It is estimated at €15,000-€20,000.
Dublin features in Harry Kernoff’s Davy Byrne’s Pub (€30,000-€35,000) and Liberty Hall, Dublin (Night) 1034 (€25,000-€30,000).
Contemporary Irish and British artists featured include Tracey Emin, Julian Opie, Charles Tyrrell, Bridget Flannery, William Scott, Michael Cullen, Felim Egan and John Doherty.
There are strong works by Gerard Dillon and Dan O’Neill among the 251 lots on the catalogue.
Viewing at Clyde Hall in the RDS is from 10am to 6pm today, tomorrow and Monday.
An antique nine inch high statute pint measure in solid brass is one of the more unusual lots at Marshs sale in Cork next Saturday (Oct 6) at noon. The inscription states it was made by D. Noster, Corke, 1751 and reveals it was bought by Cork Corporation in 1780. This one off item is believed to have been subsequently bought in New York in the 1890’s by an Irish collector. There is a big selection of furniture including a Regency walnut corner cabinet (€1,200-€1,500), eight Hepplewhite style dining chairs (€2,000-€2,500), a Regency bureau (€2,000-€2,500), a Georgian chest on chest (€1,200-€1,500), a Regency workbox (€1,200-€1,500), ten Victorian spoon back dining chairs (€1,200-€1,500), an Irish Georgian tea table (€500-€700) and a selection of walnut and rosewood card tables with estimates from €800 to €1,200.
Other items include a ship’s sextant, anchors, porcelain, glass, Waterford glass and some old lanterns. Viewing is from 10.30am to 9pm next Thursday and Friday and from 10am to the start of the auction on this day week.
