Scene and Heard

MUSIC NEWS: Anybody holding out for a reunion of the White Stripes shouldn’t hold their breath.

Scene and Heard

Jack White (right) has told a Dutch radio station he didn’t think a creative reconciliation with his former wife and bandmate Meg “could ever happen”. Another group on the path to breakup are Swedish House Mafia. Currently on a tour that’ll bring them to Dublin next Saturday, they’ve decided to call it a day. “We came, we raved, we loved,” said a statement. 50 Cent is reportedly OK after being released from hospital following treatment for neck and back injuries from a car crash. Despite his sterling recovery, I don’t think Mr Cent will be well enough to attend the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, but like everyone else, he can keep up with events in Bantry via a live blog at Irishexaminer.com from today. Finally, any fans of The Who should watch BBC Four TV tonight where the offerings include a documentary on the making of Quadrophenia that includes a contribution from Corkman Jack Lyons.

CLUB LIFE: Fish Go Deep’s new album, Draw The Line, is released today, and the Cork-based dance duo mark the occasion with a set at the Pavilion tonight. The first single from the album, ‘Being Supreme’, is very much a dancefloor affair and is getting prestigious plays from the likes of Atjazz and Xpress 2, but there is a range of styles on the LP. Our favourite track is ‘All Change’, featuring a spoken-word vocal from the late, great Gill Scott Heron.

GIG WISE: Typical. You wait all year for a good music festival in Cork and then three come along at once. Clonakilty, Liss Ard and Mitchelstown all have attractive line-ups for the August Weekend. The Clonakilty Waterfront Festival (Aug 25) is the latest to announce its roster, including London poppers Scouting For Girls and a set from Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas. Liss Ard near Skibbereen recently added Joan as Policewoman to its line-up. Chic will also be playing that event, and Nile Rodgers’ band will do two further dates in Ireland this summer: Galway Arts Festival Big Top on Jul 19; and the Button Factory in Dublin on Aug 2. The Electric Picnic (Aug 31-Sept 2) has also been added with Villagers and Dexys to its bill. !

FILM TIPS: In Cork, Triskel Christchurch has a season of films from the late French director Jean Rollin on Jul 6 and 7. One of the side-events to that occasion is a DJ set from Andy Votel, co-founder of Finders Keepers Records.
