DIY: Q&A

Q: I have rather high ceilings and don’t know what depth of skirting will fit the best with the wall height. Is there a formula for that?

A. Here’s one from a trade catalogue that might be useful but trust your eye with samples.

Ceiling height/ skirting size: To 2.4m- 90-140mm To 2.7 m- 120-180mm To 3.0m- 140-220mm To 3.6m- 180-450mm

Q: I saw some heated skirting boards at a building show in the UK. Are they available here in Ireland?

A. There is a product recently re-introduced here called Thermodul. It words through a water-fed or electric system of skirting style heating elements.

Try www.dryzone.ie. Tel: 01-4433710 (Dublin). Thermaskirt is offered by Entec. www.entec.ie.

Q. I want to put up some coving, but I’m worried about cutting the corners in a plaster product. Any advice?

A. Don’t cut them at all. Choose something like an Aertex plaster product which in standard profiles can be matched to a pre-cut mitred corner piece or if you can stand it, light polyurethane room kits come with corners as part of the set. Covemaster and Easycove include them. All are available at B&Q.
