Le Brocquy work at Adams sale

A detail of Indoors Outdoors by Louis le Brocquy, estimated at €500,000-€800,000 for Adams’ sale on Wednesday.

MAJOR works by Louis le Brocquy and William John Leech, and a rare marble bust of Cork legend Fr Prout by John Hogan (1800-1858) are among the highlights at the James Adam sale of important Irish art in Dublin next Wednesday at 6pm.

Le Brocquy’s Indoors Outdoors was the inspiration for A Family, his monumental work in the National Gallery. Adams say it is the most important le Brocquy on the market since they sold Sick Tinker Child for €820,000 in 2006 and estimate it at €500,000-€800,000.

Leech’s early Breton masterpiece Interior of a Café (1908) was included in the National Gallery’s 1984 exhibition The Irish Impressionists. It is estimated at €200,000-€400,000.

A bust of Francis Sylvester Mahony (Fr Prout) by Ireland’s most distinguished neo-classical sculptor John Hogan is estimated at €4,000-€6,000.

The auction of 148 lots includes work by Paul Henry, Jack B Yeats, Frank McKelvey, William Conor, Walter Osborne, Aloysius O’Kelly, Mainie Jellett, JH Craig, Maurice Wilks, Basil Blackshaw, Tony O’Malley and FE MacWilliam.

Viewing is at St Stephen’s Green from 2pm to 5pm tomorrow, 9.30am to 5pm on Monday and Tuesday, and also at 9.30am to 4pm on Wednesday.
