What’s in my beauty bag?

AS THE editor of Prudence magazine, Tipperary native Annette O’Meara has been championing the spend-it-wise lesson we’ve all hard to learn, long before it became a necessity.

What’s in my beauty bag?

With a ‘Champagne lifestyle on lemonade money’ philosophy, she’s all about looking great on a budget and under her guidance the magazine’s pages reflect that with stylish fashion, brilliant beauty and affordable travel, food and leisure ideas. But that doesn’t always mean going the cheap route: Kirstie McDermott discovers this savvy lady buys stocks her beauty bag with buys that are based on performance and price.

FLUTTER POWER

Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara, €19

“As the owner of lashes that are abundant but not long, I find this really highlights them well because of the curve in the brush. It goes on easily, there are no clumps and it’s really flattering. I could happily live with just this, a bit of foundation, blush and lipstick!”

TAN FAN

Marks and Spencer Suntan Holiday Tan Top-Up Face and Body Lotion, €7

“I like to use this on legs, arms and chest for summer because it builds up colour slowly, it’s a really good price and you get loads in the bottle. It’s also genuinely very moisturising and makes my skin feel really soft.”

GET CHEEKY

Bourjois Little Round Pot Blush in Cendre de Rose Brune, €9.99

“This rose pink is a great shade for summer. It just gives a soft-focus pink glow that’s flattering and ideal for warmer weather!”

KISS OFF

Essence Lipstick in Glamour Queen, €2.49

“I bought five of these for €5 in a chemist in Cloughjordan — they were doing a special offer. That worked out as one for me and one for my four sisters! What’s nice about this is it’s lovely and moisturising, it’s a little like a lipbalm. It looks subtle on and it smells divine!”

SEXY SPRITZ

Tom Ford Black Orchid eau de parfum, €82

“Love it! I am constantly asked what this scent is, I get tons of admiring comments. While it really gets you noticed, it’s not overpowering or suffocating.”

PERFECT SKIN

Art Deco High Definition Foundation, €30.75

“Foundation and concealer are two products you should spend a bit more on — they’re the basis of your makeup and if you get them right, everything else falls into place. This foundation gives enough coverage to even out redness but looks natural, it’s soft and creamy and applies like a dream.”

COVER UP

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit, €33

“The brilliant thing about this is that they’ll match it correctly to your skintone at the counter so you know it’s right for you. I find it is great for hiding dark circles and it’s best used with the brand’s brush as that way you’re not pulling at the delicate skin with fingers.”

Vital stats

Favourite brand: I really love Origins for skincare

Beauty budget: I reckon I spend about €50 every month

Favourite item: Lipstick is the one thing I love the most!

Beauty destination: Debenhams on Henry Street, Dublin is great because they’ve a really good variety of brands to suit every budget

Gone, but not forgotten: I loved Origins’ makeup range and they discontinued it!
