Growing pains

WHEN the trashier end of the media is desperate for dirt on an entertainer, and can’t find any, there is a tendency to manufacture non-events.

Growing pains

Hence the tabloid non-story earlier this year about teenage actress and pop singer Miley Cyrus dancing “provocatively” with a man “three times her age”. This happened at a cast party to celebrate the end of filming The Last Song, which starred the then 16-year-old star. It transpired that the man she was dancing with was the film’s 45-year-old producer Adam Shankman. Who is gay.

Miley Cyrus – better known as squeaky-clean Disney poppet Hannah Montana, school girl Miley Stewart by day, secret pop star Hannah by night – has to date always been squeaky clean in real life too. It’s her 18th birthday on Tuesday, and until the unexpected events of last month – more of which later – her most controversial moment has been to perform using a stripper’s pole at the Teen Choice Awards in California in August 2009. She was 16 at the time, and there was uproar about the inappropriateness of such a performance. What kind of message was she sending to her legions of little girl fans?
