Learn from 'near misses’ on Irish farms
Farm Safety Week takes place from July 22-26.
For every farm accident, there are thought to be around 10 "near misses", but taking steps to review the circumstances could prevent future more serious ones, highlights one of Farm Safety Week's key messages.
Most accidents occur when a source of energy - for example, a tractor, machine or livestock - makes contact with a person injuring them. A ‘near miss’ is when the source of energy is present, but due to timing or place, contact with the person is missed.
Dr John McNamara, Teagasc health and safety specialist advisor, said that accident analysis data indicates that for every accident, there can be about 10 near misses. "This knowledge provides everyone seeking to improve safety with the opportunity to learn from a near miss," he said. “Think of all the factors that led up to it and consider what actions are needed to prevent a recurrence."
IFA Farm Family & Social Affairs chairman Teresa Roche added: "As a farmer, you should keep a list of near misses. Review after each occurrence and on a regular basis to consider how you can improve safety on your farm."
